Description

Based very closely on an example in the Kunsthistorisches Museum Vienna. Dated to 1400 -1410 and most likely produced in Milan this represents almost the final evolution of the bascinet before it was replaced by the sallet and armet. The skull is fabricated from two pieces with holes for the vervalles and a second set around the bottom edge for attaching the lining.
The visor is worked from a single piece with a single weld finished with the distinctive rectangular slots for the vision slit and again on the lower angles of the snout.
The pivoting points for the visor are hinged so the visor can be removed from the bascinet. The pivots being decorated with floral washers and chased decorative rivet heads.
